Since basing myself in Senegal and sharing my experiences online, I've consistently received emails and messages from people asking for tips and information about HOW to actually plan a trip in Africa. Because the reality is, there is still such little information available on the topic.
To help, I’ve compiled a list of some practical tips and advice to help you prepare - though i's important to remember that not everything will apply everywhere throughout the continent Africa is made up of 54 countries after all).
Want to visit an African country but have no clue where to start?
All regions: As a rule of thumb, always stick with drinking bottled water.
All regions: If you eat meat, be sure to try the grilled meats sold on the street. Just make sure you have the meat come straight off the grill before you eat it.
All regions: It is typically not considered rude for people to stare, so they will likely stare!
Predominantly Muslim countries: Can be quite conservative about dressing so if you’re not at the beach or on an island, cover up. Skirt at the knee at least and minimum cleavage. Also take your shoes off in Muslim households and be mindful of religious customs - at least offer to as a symbol of respect. Showing respect is taken very seriously.
West Africa: There are lots of talented tailors in the markets, make sure to get some clothing made.
West Africa: Unless you’re living in a quiet residential area, expect noise in the day and sometimes through the night. Noise pollution is a serious problem here.
West Africa: Expect quite a lot of superstition, it comes from a good place but can sometimes throw you off.
West Africa: Always keep your passport or ID card handy especially when traveling at night. You run the risk of going to jail if you can’t be identified. In the event that something happens make sure you have the US embassy’s information on hand and immediately ask to make a phone call upon arrival.
East Africa: You can use an extremely popular and handy money transfer service on your mobile phone called M-Pesa.
East Africa: Be polite, greet the elderly and the people in your neighborhood, you never know if they’ll save you from harm someday.
South Africa: Be aware of your surroundings, Johannesburg in particular is a notorious crime haven. While it is generally safe to travel here, try not to be too flashy with your possessions when you are out exploring.
